| Forest Management Properties (MCD Properties) The Muskegon Conservation District owns a total of 1,025 acres throughout Muskegon County. These properties have a conservation easement in place that will protect them from future development. The majority of the property owned by the Muskegon Conservation District was deeded over to the District from the United States Forest Service. The parcels range in size from 20 to 120 acres. The lands are open for recreational activities that do not hinder the ability of the District to utilize the property for its intended purpose, forest management demonstration. In most cases, individuals may use the property for the following general purpose activities without notification or consent: hiking / wildlife watching, environmental education, and harvesting edible mushrooms. Certain parcels owned by the Muskegon Conservation District are also open for special purposes such as hunting, trapping, skeet shooting, camping, or other activities not listed as a general purpose. Individuals interested in using the parcels for these activities must be issued a special use permit by the Muskegon Conservation District. In 2006 the Muskegon Conservation District started a fee-based permit system for hunting and trapping as a way to limit hunting pressure (users / acre), improve the hunting experience for individual hunters, better monitor users because of past abuses by outside parties, and generate a nominal revenue base to improve management of the parcels. __________________________________________________ Sirex Wood Wasp Study: Throughout 2008 the Muskegon Conservation District assisted Michigan Tech University in studying the distribution of the Sirex Wood Wasp by allowing Steve Takacs, from Michigan Tech, to utilize the District parcels for sampling. At this point we haven't heard that Sirex has been found in any of the sites, however, not all of the specimens collected have been inspected. To learn more about the study visit http://na.fs.fed.us/spfo/pubs/pest_al/sirex_woodwasp/sirex_woodwasp.htm ____________________________________________________________ Hunting & Trapping Hunting permits shall be issued for hunting in 7 day increments (Monday through Sunday) at the cost of $20 per permit. Permits shall be issued on a first come first serve basis. Each permit shall convene the rights of a single individual to use the property for the designated seven days during a given hunting season and according to verification of a hunting license for the designated hunting activity. The District shall issue no more than one permit per 20 acres of land during any given 7 day period. Multiple 7 day permits and / or multiple parcel permits may be requested at the same time; however each 7 day increment or parcel permit will cost $20 per permit. An individual receiving a permit may request a greater “density” of hunters / acre in order to hunt with friends / family. All parties must agree to the higher density. Trapping permits shall be issued for trapping in monthly increments (1st day of month through last day of the month) at the cost of $25 per permit.
